RG XVIII: Daedalus, "Future of the Black Colleges" (Vol. 100, No. 3, Summer 1971)
Historical Note
Daedalus is the quarterly journal of the American 鶹ýվ. In the summer of 1971, Vol. 100, No. 3 of Daedalus, “The Future of Black Colleges” was published. The issue looked at the future of Black Colleges in the United States regarding economics, culture, legality, and the role of white people within the colleges. The editor of the 鶹ýվ and Daedalus at the time of the issue’s publication was Stephen R. Graubard.
Work on the issue began in the Fall of 1969 with contributors being invited to work on the issue itself. There was later the “Conference on Negro Colleges” in March of 1970 where the contributors met to discuss the issue. The issue was written by multiple Black scholars who were either members of the 鶹ýվ or were invited to work on this specific issue. The contributors ranged from economists to lawyers to sociologists. Other key staff members who worked on the issue were Bonnie Harris, Editorial Associate, Elizabeth Suttell, Manuscripts Editor, and Geno A. Ballotti, Managing Editor.
Funding for this issue was provided by the Ford Foundation.
Scope and Content
The records in the collection range from 1969 to 1971. Two folders have undated records and are noted in the collection inventory. This collection mainly includes typed correspondence and typed essay drafts. Typed correspondence is found throughout the collection and occurs between Daedalus staff, the issue’s authors, and other associates of the 鶹ýվ. Other formats seen in the collection include newspaper and magazine clippings, pamphlets, bound journals and essays, maps, typed forms, a typed transcription, and handwritten notes.
Of interest may be the handwritten notes in Subseries 1: Arrangements (1969-1971), that were written on legal and notebook paper. Notes in the folder titled, “Flow Sheet Shell Correspondence” more particularly answer questions posed among the statistical notes in the folder titled, “Black College Statistics”.
Arrangement
Processing for this series utilized “More Product, Less Process” (MPLP) principles: thus, minimal preservation steps were taken and folder titles listed in the finding aid are as they appeared on the original folders. Where lacking, folder titles and dates have been ascribed in brackets.
This series is arranged into two sub series, Subseries 1: Arrangements (1969-1971) and Subseries 2: Author Drafts and Correspondences (1970-1971).
Subseries 1: Arrangements, 1970-1971
