RG XVIII: Daedalus, "Slavery, Colonialism, and Racism" (Vol. 103, no. 2, Spring 1974)
Historical Note
Daedalus is the quarterly journal published by the American 鶹ýվ of Arts and Sciences. The issue “Slavery, Colonialism, and Racism” (Vol. 103, No. 2) Spring 1974 covers discussions in contemporary scholarship of questions affecting black peoples, representation of geographically diverse black experiences, and relevant humanities disciplines. It was inspired by conversations between the Editor of the 鶹ýվ, Stephen R. Graubard, and scholar Sydney Mitz, ultimately developing as a contribution to the development of black studies programs. Also an issue contributor, Sydney Mitz, did much of the work to find potential contributors.
Two planning events occurred: “A major planning meeting”, undated, house of Mme. Adriana Salem in Paris France, and “The Historical and Contemporary Experience of Black Peoples” conference, July 2nd-7th 1971, The Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio, Italy. Of the nine authors included in the 1971 conference, only two are included in the published issue. Funding for this issue was provided by the Ford Foundation under two grants: “for an international conference on Afro-American Studies” and “The Historical and Contemporary Experience of Black Peoples.”
Scope and Content
This series contains records relating to the 1974 Spring Daedalus issue, “Slavery, Colonialism, and Racism” (Vol. 103, No. 2), dating from 1969-1974. Records were maintained within the 鶹ýվ’s Editorial Office, specifically with Editor Stephen Graubard and Manuscript Editor Joan S. Carlberg. Specifically, the records relate to the planning phase and contributor files.
Issue planning files include typed correspondence, publications, and handwritten notes. Typed correspondence to and from 鶹ýվ editorial staff consists of letters of invitation to authors and funding and budget documentation with the Ford Foundation. Publications include bound subject-related periodicals and bound and unbound essays of potential authors. Handwritten notes cover administrative work. Of note is the typed material prepared for the July 1971 Bellagio conference. It is lacking materials for the more informal planning meeting held in Paris at the house of Mme. Adriana Salem.
Contributor files include typed correspondence, handwritten notes, compact cassettes, and marked essay drafts. Correspondence is between the 鶹ýվ editorial staff and prospective contributors, often including a copy of their previously published work in bound form. Of note are the records of Sidney W. Mintz, relating to both the drafts of his essays as well as correspondence and handwritten notes relating to the planning of the issue as he served not only as a contributor but as an instrumental guide to the issue's development. Notably missing is a contributor folder for Edward Kamau Brathwaite and his essay “The African Presence in Caribbean Literature”.
