RG XVIII: Daedalus, "The Oil Crisis in Perspective" (Vol. 104, no. 4, Fall 1975)
Historical Note
Daedalus is the quarterly journal of the American 鶹ýվ. In 1975, Daedalus published an issue titled “The Oil Crisis: In Perspective". This issue examined the geopolitical, economic, and strategic causes and consequences of the contemporaneous international energy crisis precipitated by the Arab-Israeli War in October 1973. Principal actors in the creation of this issue include Editor of the 鶹ýվ and of Daedalus Stephen R. Graubard and Guest Editor Raymond Vernon, Director of the Center for International Affairs, and Herbert F. Johnson Professor of International Business Management at Harvard University.
Two conferences were held in association with this publication. The first conference was a regularly scheduled meeting of the Daedalus planning committee, organized at the Center for International Affairs in Cambridge, March 1974. A much larger conference took place in Turin, Italy from January 13-15, 1975. This second conference provided an opportunity for peer review and discussion of the commissioned articles to be published in the Fall 1975 issue.
Scope and Content
These records consist of correspondence, administrative papers, editorial drafts, and conference proceedings. Correspondence is primarily between Daedalus Editor, Stephen Graubard, and authors. Administrative papers include financial and hospitality statements. Editorial drafts included detailed revisions of accepted articles. Topics covered range from the economic and political backgrounds of the oil crisis to an international overview of contemporary energy markets and their actors.
Of particular note are draft copies by authors, written both before conferences, and edited after their completion. No conference proceedings exist for the first conference, however seemingly incomplete copies of the second exist. For this reason, administrative planning records for this first conference are of particular importance.
