RG XVIII: Daedalus, "A New America?" (Vol. 107, No. 1, Winter 1978)
Historical Note
Daedalus is the quarterly journal of the American 鶹ýվ. In 1978 Daedalus released an issue titled “A New America”. Activity related to the publication spanned from 1974-1978. The issue focused on themes of racism, equality, intellectuality, and the American work ethic. The Editor was Stephen R. Graubard. Geno Ballotti was the Managing Editor. Katharine O. Parker was the Manuscripts Editor for this issue.
Planning for the issue and conference began in 1974 with Editor Stephen R. Graubard compiling lists of potential participants to contribute articles and topics he would like covered. A planning conference was held in Washington D.C at the Woodrow Wilson International Center from 28-29 January 1977. The conference was attended by Graubard, authors, and observers. It concluded with final edits incorporating their comments. Authors in attendance included McGeorge Bundy, Elizabeth Hardwick, John T. Dunlop, and Louise Weinberg.
Through his correspondence, Graubard noted the quality of discussions and the essays being produced. The issue was published in Winter 1978 and Graubard felt “A New America” to be one of the more important Daedalus issues to date.
Funding was provided by the Ford Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation.
Scope and Content
This series contains records pertaining to the Daedalus Winter 1978 Issue, Volume 107, “A New America”, including the Author Conference held 28-29 January 1977. The records range from 1974-1978. The records primarily include memoranda, author files, and various correspondence.
It contains general administrative records including memoranda and correspondence pertaining to the planning of the conference and publication. It also contains author files including correspondence relating to both attendees of the conference and eventual publication contributors. These files also contains edited draft essays and authors’ bio sheets, beginning in 1976. Files for participants who have declined to participate or are undetermined are included.
Memoranda were mostly drafted and sent to the Board of Editors from Graubard between 1975-1978. They include coordination on where and when to hold the conference, potential participants and topics.
Correspondence is primarily to and from Editor Stephen Graubard from 1974-1978. The majority of the correspondence regards conference planning and publication. There are four folders containing correspondence between Graubard and people whose roles were undetermined. Of note is a small amount of correspondence between Graubard and Katharine O. Parker regarding article revisions.
Arrangement
Processing for this series utilized “More Product, Less Process” (MPLP) principles: thus, minimal preservation steps were taken and folder titles listed in the finding aid are as they appeared on the original folders. Where lacking, folder titles and dates have been ascribed in brackets. Staples and paper clips were removed and records were refoldered in archival folders. The series contains three subseries.
The series contains three subseries. Subseries 1: Administrative Records, 1975-1979; Subseries 2: Conference, 1975-1977; and Subseries 3: Participants, 1974-1978.
Subseries 1 and 2 have been arranged chronologically. The generally alphabetical original order of Subseries 3 has been maintained.
