ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

Historical Note

Daedalus is the quarterly journal of the American 鶹ýվ. In the fall of 1987, Daedalus published an issue titled “Learning About Women: Gender, Politics, and Power.” More than twenty years earlier, in 1964, the journal had published its first gender-themed issue, “The Woman in America.” 1987's “Learning About Women” came in response to the changing landscape of the gender studies discipline, seeking to examine how the field had developed and how these transformations impacted the ways Americans were thinking about gender in the 1980s.

Prior to planning meetings, Daedalus editor Stephen Graubard invited feminist scholars Susan Bourque, Jill Ker Conway, and Joan Wallach Scott to guest edit the issue. In planning meetings, the editors brought together scholars, theorists, and activists from a variety of disciplines, including historians Penina Migdal Glazer and Carl N. Degler, scientists Anne Fausto-Sterling and Evelyn Fox Keller, and politicians Elizabeth Holtzman and Shirley Williams. As Graubard wrote in his preface to the issue, “the more that serious and continuing dialogue can be opened up to involve men and women both inside and outside gender studies, the more the field’s ample dimension will be recognized.” The “Learning About Women” issue was republished in book form by the University of Michigan Press in 1989.

Funding was provided by the Rockefeller Foundation.
