Historical Note

Daedalus is the �鶹��ý��վ's quarterly journal. In 1991, the Editor of the �鶹��ý��վ and of Daedalus, Stephen R. Graubard, began planning a Daedalus issue to examine the circumstances that make the lives of American children precarious.  Graubard organized several conferences and planning meetings for the issue with authors in April 1991. The result was the Winter 1993 issue of Daedalus, “America’s Childhood”, consisting of 12 research papers written by 16 authors.

Funding was provided by the Smith Richardson Foundation.

Scope and Content

This collection contains primarily editorial records related to the Winter 1993 issue of Daedalus, “America’s Childhood”, dating from 1989 to 1993. 

Records include correspondence, editorial records, and records related to the journal’s publication and planning meetings. Correspondence is chiefly between the �鶹��ý��վ Editor Stephen R. Graubard, authors, Assistant Editors Victoria A. Foster and Phyllis S. Bendell, and the Smith Richardson Foundation. A large portion of 15 authors’ galley and confirmation proof printed in 1991 are included. However, David Finn’s records is not included in the collection. Galley and confirmation proofs are mostly oversized. A small part of the collection are general publication records, offprints, and complimentary copies between 18992 and 1993. Of particular note are transcripts of the planning meetings held in 1991. 

Arrangement

This collection was processed using  “More Product, Less Process” (MPLP) principles. The original order has largely been maintained. Folder titles are written as they appeared; where lacking, an ascribed title has been given. Loose materials have been foldered with ascribed titles. 

The records are organized into two sub-series: Sub-series 1: Planning (1989-1992), and Subseries 2: Editorial process (1990-1993).

The first subseries consists of events held before the editorial process of “America’s Childhood”. It largely includes correspondence and other items documenting author’s conferences and planning meetings held in April 1991. This sub-series is arranged in chronological order. 

The second subseries includes records printed during and after the editorial process and consists of two sub-subseries: Sub-subseries 2.1: Author’s correspondence (1990-1993), and Sub-subseries 2.2: Author’s editorial records (1992-1993). Both are arranged in alphabetical order. The first sub-subseries includes author’s files. The second sub-subseries consists of drafts, galleys, and confirmation proofs, with an occasionally corresponding correspondence file. It also includes general publications and complimentary copies published from 1992 to 1993.
