Since her retirement in 2010 her major activity has been in the area of pre-college science education and particularly around issues involved in adoption, implementation and assessment of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These standards are based on a National Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ study which she chaired. The study was published as "A Framework for k-12 Science Education" (National Â鶹´«Ã½ÍøÕ¾ Press).  NGSS have been adopted by at least 17 states and the district of Columbia.

Helen also served on the initial governing board of Ecuador's National University of Education.
